What to watch for
Three tons are in common use and all three differ. A US short ton is 2,000 lb (0.907 t), a British long ton is 2,240 lb (1.016 t), and a metric tonne is 1,000 kg (2,205 lb). Lifting and load ratings quoted in bare "tons" should be pinned down before anything is lifted on the strength of them.
