Common questions
What standards are the drill bits made to?
Drill bit sets are manufactured to DIN standards (twist drills to DIN 338).
What are the taps and dies made of?
SK5 steel, rated to 58 HRC — taps manufactured to DIN 352 and dies to DIN 223.
How do I stop drill bits burning out in steel?
Slow down and lubricate. Larger bits need lower RPM; a drop of cutting fluid or oil on steel keeps the edge cool and the swarf flowing. Let the bit cut at its own pace — heavy pressure with high speed is what turns a bit blue and soft. Step up through a pilot hole for larger diameters.
How do I use a tap without snapping it?
Drill the correct tap-drill hole first (the tap packaging or a tap-drill chart gives the size per thread), keep the tap square to the hole, and cut with a back-off rhythm — half a turn forward, quarter turn back to break the chip. Cutting fluid on steel, and never force it: SK5 steel at 58 HRC is hard, and hard means brittle if bent.
What's the difference between a tap and a die?
A tap cuts internal threads (in a hole); a die cuts external threads (on a rod or bolt). Teng taps are made to DIN 352 and dies to DIN 223, both in SK5 steel.
