Petrol costs $4.211 per gallon in the United States and £1.599 per litre in the United Kingdom — €0.963 against €1.869 a litre on a common basis, near enough double. Almost all of that difference is tax, not fuel: strip out duty and VAT and the same two litres cost €0.845 and €0.938. 49.8% of a British litre is tax against 12.3% of an American one. Spain is included as a European comparison, and diesel is below alongside petrol.
Pump prices
The middle column is what the sign at the roadside actually says, in the unit and currency that country quotes. The right-hand column puts all three on a common basis so they can be read against each other. These are the prices a driver pays, tax included.

What is tax, and what is fuel
The same prices with duty and VAT removed. The right-hand column is the share of the pump price that is tax: just under half in the United Kingdom, and around an eighth in the United States.

The gap is mostly tax — but not entirely
Across these three countries the pump price of petrol varies by 94.1% between cheapest and dearest. Net of tax that spread falls to 24.1%. For diesel it goes from 71.3% to 14.3%. Taking tax out shrinks the international difference by roughly three and a half times.
It does not close it. A 24.1% gap in the underlying cost is still real, and it comes from refining mix, how far fuel travels from terminal to forecourt, how much competition there is at the roadside, and differing biofuel blending requirements. Anyone who tells you fuel costs the same everywhere once tax is removed is rounding a real difference down to zero.
The United States figure carries one structural difference worth naming: a US pump price includes federal and state excise but no value-added tax. The United Kingdom and Spain both charge VAT on top of the duty, so VAT is levied on the duty as well as on the fuel. That compounding is a large part of why the European columns sit where they do.
Why diesel behaves differently
Diesel carries a lower tax share than petrol in all three countries — 46.2% against 49.8% in the United Kingdom, for instance — but starts from a higher underlying cost, so the pump prices end up closer together than the tax rates alone would suggest. For anyone running a van or a truck rather than a car, diesel is the number that matters, and it is the one where the international spread is narrowest.
Method and precision
United States prices are the weekly retail averages published by the Energy Information Administration for the week ending 3 August 2026, converted at the European Central Bank reference rate for 10 August 2026. US tax is federal excise — 18.4 cents per gallon on petrol and 24.4 cents on diesel, unchanged since 1993 — plus the EIA national average of state taxes and fees as at 1 January 2026, revised 4 March 2026. State rates vary enormously, from single digits to over 70 cents a gallon, so the US tax share is an average and not a figure any particular driver pays.
United Kingdom prices are the weekly road fuel prices published by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero for 3 August 2026. Duty and VAT come from the same file rather than from any assumption on our part, which makes the UK the one row here that needs no external tax constant at all.
Spain is the median pump price across 10,961 filling stations in the official register published by the Ministry, read on 10 August 2026. Spain publishes the register, not a national average, so this median is ours and not an official figure — we use the median rather than the mean because a mean is dragged down by discount and rural sites. Spanish tax is 21% IVA, in force since 1 July 2026, plus Impuesto Especial sobre Hidrocarburos. That duty is currently under a temporary reduction that steps down month by month under Real Decreto-ley 18/2026, so the rate used here is the August 2026 one: €0.373 per litre on petrol and €0.279 on diesel. It changes again in September.
One caveat on comparing the grades directly. US regular is 87 AKI, which is roughly 91 to 92 RON. UK and Spanish unleaded is 95 RON, roughly 90 to 91 AKI. They are close but not the same fuel, and the European grade is the slightly higher specification of the two.
What this means if you run vehicles for a living
For a workshop or a fleet, the numbers above are an operating cost line rather than a curiosity. A van covering 25,000 miles a year at 35 mpg burns roughly 3,250 litres — so the gap between the Spanish and American diesel columns is about €2,003 a vehicle a year, before anything else is bought. On a ten-van fleet that is a meaningful number, and almost none of it is under an operator's control: it is duty and VAT, set by statute.
What is under your control is everything the fuel is pushing around. Correctly torqued wheels and properly serviced running gear are the difference between a van earning and a van waiting, and tyre pressure alone moves real fuel economy. Workshop and vehicle equipment is in automotive tools, torque equipment for wheel and engine work is in torque equipment, and the tray and cabinet systems that keep a mobile van organised are in tool storage.
