Smart Box: automated tool control with user-level accountability

Smart Box is a Teng Tools roller cabinet with secure user access, sensing built into the foam layout and a screen that shows what is present, what is out and who has it. Each user carries an RFID or keycard credential. Sensors in the approved layout detect when a controlled tool leaves its location and when it comes back. Every change carries a user, a date and a time, on the cabinet and in the central platform. Supervisors spend their time on exceptions, not on counting.

Manager release, where you want it: a manager verifies the cabinet, releases it with a master credential, users work on their own credentials, the cabinet monitors, the manager reconciles outstanding tools at the end of the period and the cabinet returns to a controlled state.

Final capacity is determined by the approved tool list and foam layout; quoted capacities should therefore be treated as application-dependent. Cloud hosting is standard; customer-hosted deployment is available subject to scoping. An IT and security overview is available on request.

The questions engineers ask first

What is the Teng Tools Smart Box?
An automated tool accountability cabinet combining controlled user access, bespoke tool organisation and electronic tool-presence monitoring, giving visibility of cabinet access and outstanding tooling.
How is it different from a conventional locked toolbox?
A conventional lock controls physical access. Smart Box also records authorised access and monitors configured tool locations, so you know whether controlled tools are present or outstanding.
Does the system know who removed a tool?
It combines individual user access records with changes in tool presence and the activity history, which identifies the access event associated with a tool removal.
Does every tool have a sensor?
The cabinet is engineered around the approved tool layout. Monitored tool locations are configured according to the agreed application and system design.
Can it detect when a tool is returned?
Yes. Monitored locations detect changes in tool presence, so the tool status updates when it is correctly returned.
Does it replace manual checks?
It reduces reliance on repetitive manual counts. Visual inspections and physical audits required by your own quality, safety or FOD procedures stay in place.
Why use two-layer foam if the tools are digitally monitored?
The controls complement one another. Electronic monitoring provides the digital record; contrasting foam makes an empty pocket immediately visible during a physical inspection.
What happens if a tool goes missing?
The platform shows the outstanding status and the activity information to support the investigation. You then follow your own missing-tool, quality or FOD procedure.
Can normal users be locked out until a manager has checked the box?
Yes. A manager-controlled workflow can be configured so that normal access stays restricted until an authorised manager or supervisor completes the release.
Can we use our existing employee RFID cards?
In most cases, yes. The card frequency is confirmed before manufacture so the readers are specified to match. Compatibility is confirmed during technical scoping.
Can one manager see several cabinets, or several sites?
Yes. The platform supports central visibility across multiple cabinets, and multi-site deployments depending on the agreed configuration.
Is the system cloud based?
The standard deployment combines local cabinet services with a cloud-based management platform. Customer-hosted deployment is available subject to scoping. Ask for the IT and security overview through the form.
What connectivity does the cabinet need?
Ethernet, Wi-Fi or mobile data. Ethernet and Wi-Fi use your existing network; mobile data is independent of it and carries a running cost.
What happens if a sensor or system component reports a fault?
System exceptions are investigated under the applicable support and maintenance process. Specific service arrangements depend on the deployment.
