The blades run from 0.05 mm to 1.0 mm in twenty steps, each one etched with its own figure, and two can be stacked where a clearance falls between sizes. As an automotive set that range covers electrode gaps, tappet and rocker clearances, and bearing or guide clearances on engines, motorcycles, mowers, chainsaws and outboards.

Away from engines the same blades suit guitar setup work, where string action and neck relief are set to a figure, and machinist tasks such as checking shim packs, slide clearance and parallelism on a setup.

Blades are hardened rolled steel and pivot out of a steel holder. A knurled screw at the pivot clamps the blade in use so it cannot fold back under pressure, and holds the stack closed in transit. Supplied complete, 3.1 oz (88 g).

• SPARK PLUG GAPPING TOOL AND VALVE ADJUSTMENT: Slide a blade into the gap between the spark plug electrodes, or between a valve stem and rocker, and read the gap straight off the blade. The set covers 0.05 mm to 1.0 mm (0.002 in to 0.039 in), which takes in the spark plug gaps and tappet clearances on most engines and motorcycles. Use it for valve adjustment on a rebuild, a tune up or a routine service, where the clearance has to be set to a figure rather than guessed at by feel.
• 20 BLADES, 0.05 MM TO 1.0 MM: Twenty separate blades step finely enough to find the exact clearance instead of settling for the nearest one. Each blade is etched with its own thickness so you can read it without hunting for a chart, and blades can be stacked to make up a size that is not on its own blade. • HARDENED ROLLED STEEL: Every blade is hardened rolled steel, so it keeps its thickness after being pushed into a tight gap between metal faces again and again. A blade that has spread or worn reads high and sets the clearance wrong, which is the whole reason a gauge like this is worth having. Rolled steel also keeps the edges straight, so the blade slides into a narrow gap rather than catching on the way in.
• FOLD UP CASE WITH LOCKING SCREW: The blades pivot out of a steel case and fold back into it, and a tightening screw at the pivot holds the blade you are using rigid while you take the reading. The same screw stops the whole stack fanning open in a toolbox or a pocket. Blade length is 3-15/16 in (100 mm), which reaches past a rocker or a plug without the case fouling anything, and the complete set weighs 3.1 oz (88 g).
