  • Three colours, not one. Black top layer, white intermediate layer, red base. Remove a tool and its position shows red.
  • Marked. The size or description of each tool is marked in the foam beside its pocket, so a returning 13 mm does not land in the 12 mm slot.
  • High-density EVA. Teng states the foam stays soft and flexible in cold workshops.
  • Sold full. A foam set ships with its tools in it. The empty compartment trays, such as the 7-compartment FOAM1 storage tray, are for fasteners and small parts.

How Teng Foam Tool Trays Fit Together

The name on every Teng foam set (FOAM1, FOAM2, FOAM3, FOAM4X4, FOAMX2, FOAMX4) is its module size. These are the footprints published on the product pages:

  • FOAM1: 265 x 142 mm, about 50 mm deep. Small sets such as a 4-piece Phillips and Pozidriv screwdriver set.
  • FOAM2: 265 x 282 mm, 50 mm deep. The workhorse size for single-drive socket sets, wrench sets and screwdriver sets.

The numbers add up. A 265 mm module beside a 115 mm strip is 380 mm, the width of a 26-inch drawer. Down the length, FOAM3 plus FOAM1 is 575 mm, two FOAM2 trays 564 mm, one FOAMX4 570 mm. So a 26-inch drawer takes one FOAM4X4 tray, or a column of 265 mm modules beside an X-series strip.

Teng mixes formats in its own kits. The 1,133-piece set in 33 EVA foam inserts uses 4 FOAM1, 8 FOAM2, 7 FOAMX4 and 14 FOAM4X4 trays, laid out for the 53-inch PRO35 chest and cabinet.

Measure the drawer with it closed. Width and length decide the layout; clear height decides whether the deepest tray fits.

How to Plan a Drawer by Job or by Drive Size

There are two sound ways to lay out foam, and most cabinets use both. By drive size suits the main roller cabinet a bay works from all day. One drawer per drive keeps the check simple:

By job suits a service case, a cart or a drawer one trade owns. An electrical case holds insulated FOAM3 sets; a torque drawer holds the 3/8 and 1/2 drive click torque wrench pair in FOAMX4 (20 to 210 Nm) next to the sockets it is used with.

To plan one drawer:

  1. Measure internal length, width and clear height with the drawer shut.
  2. Write the tool list the work needs, not the list of tools you own.
  3. Choose drive size or job for that drawer, then pick one FOAM4X4 tray or a 265 mm column plus a 115 mm strip.
  4. Put the daily drawer at waist height and the heaviest sets low.
  5. Photograph the finished drawer and keep its tool list. A KIT label can point to that list later.

  • Several bays or sites must match, so any tech can check any drawer.

Cutting your own wins when:

Most advice sells foam as tidiness and stops at the install photo. That leads to two mistakes.

  • It lays out the tools you own, not the tools the job needs. A pocket for a tool nobody uses stays full forever and teaches people to ignore the drawer. A tool the job needs with no pocket rides loose and is invisible to the check.
  • It treats the gap as the control. A red pocket that nobody looks at is decoration. The control is the check at a set moment, by a named person.
