The short version: both brands back their hand tools for life with a photo-based claim, so neither of us wins there. The difference shows up on the thing you are actually spending thousands on. GearWrench warranties tool storage for three years. We warranty it for the life of the tool, the same as everything else.

Same lifetime warranty on the tools. Ours also covers the box.

This is the part worth reading twice if you are buying a cabinet. GearWrench publishes its coverage by category, and storage is not in the lifetime bracket.

Three years is a reasonable warranty. It is just a different promise from the one on the tools sitting in the drawers, and on a cabinet costing several thousand dollars that gap is worth knowing about before you buy rather than in year four. The authorized-seller clause is worth a look too: GearWrench is sold widely across marketplaces, and their warranty states it applies only to products bought from an authorized US seller.

They sell foam trays. We sell foam that upgrades to an audit trail.

Both brands put tools in cut foam, and we are not going to pretend otherwise. Our flagship 1,133 piece Monster Stack is a foam kit, and 169 products in our range have foam in the name. On the foam itself there is not much between us.

The difference is what the foam can become. Teng runs tool control in three tiers, and the same kit moves up a tier without replacing the tools:

Foam. Visual control. The tool sits in black, the pocket underneath is red, so a gap is obvious from across the bay.
KIT. Digital control. A QR label per drawer, a phone app, calibration dates, electronic auditing, issue reporting and exportable records.
Smart Box. Intelligent control. A roller cabinet with RFID or keycard access, sensing built into the foam layout and a screen on the cabinet. Tools are detected as they leave and return, and every change carries a user, a date and a time.

If you are running FOD procedures, shared tooling across shifts, or an audit you have to evidence, that upgrade path is the whole argument. You start where your risk is today and move up later without rebuying a single tool. GearWrench's modular sets are EVA foam trays sized to fit their cabinets, which is a good product and a different job.

The honest trade-off: if you just want the cheapest way to get tools into a drawer and you will never need an audit record, none of that tiering is worth paying for, and GearWrench foam does the visual job perfectly well.

One thing worth knowing whichever way you go: loaded-kit prices move between retailers, sometimes by a wide margin for the same item on the same day. Check more than one seller before you buy, from either of us.

When we are the better call

You are buying storage, not just tools, and you want it covered for life rather than three years.
You want a tray that leaves the drawer as a sealed module: a hinged click-lock lid and dovetail joints that lock tray to tray. We sell flat foam too, so this is a choice rather than the only option.
You are buying at full-cabinet level, where we come out level or cheaper per piece.
You want a warranty with no authorized-seller clause and no receipt hunt.
You want one supplier for over 3,000 items, designed in Sweden since 1985, shipped from Fort Worth.
Your torque wrenches matter: ours conform to ISO 6789, are individually tested, and ship with a Declaration of Conformance rather than a 90 day accuracy guarantee.

Do both brands really have a lifetime warranty? On hand tools, yes, and both accept a photo instead of the tool coming back. The difference is what else is covered. GearWrench publishes 3 years on tool storage, 5 on carts, 1 on torque products with a 90-day calibration guarantee. Ours covers storage for the life of the tool.

What if I bought it on a marketplace? GearWrench's warranty applies to products bought from an authorized US seller and they reserve the right to reject claims from unauthorized sellers. We have no such clause.

What do the trays actually do that foam does not? They close and they connect. A hinged click-lock lid and dovetail joints mean a tray leaves the cabinet as a sealed module and locks to the next one when it comes back.
