The short version: on loose hand tools GearWrench is usually cheaper than us, and both brands back their hand tools for life with a photo-based claim, so neither of us wins there. The difference shows up on the thing you are actually spending thousands on. GearWrench warranties tool storage for three years. We warranty it for the life of the tool, the same as everything else.
Same lifetime warranty on the tools. Ours also covers the box.
This is the part worth reading twice if you are buying a cabinet. GearWrench publishes its coverage by category, and storage is not in the lifetime bracket.

Three years is a reasonable warranty. It is just a different promise from the one on the tools sitting in the drawers, and on a cabinet costing several thousand dollars that gap is worth knowing about before you buy rather than in year four. The authorized-seller clause is worth a look too: GearWrench is sold widely across marketplaces, and their warranty states it applies only to products bought from an authorized US seller.
Our trays have lids, and they lock to each other
GearWrench's modular sets are EVA foam trays. Their own pages describe durable EVA foam storage trays available in multiple sizes that fit a variety of professional storage systems including GearWrench cabinets and chests. They are drawer inserts, and good ones.
Teng's TC and TTX trays are built differently. Each tray is rigid, carries a removable hinged click-lock lid, and joins to the tray next to it with dovetail joints. So a tray locks into the drawer, locks to its neighbour, and lifts out as a closed module you can carry to the vehicle and back without tipping the contents across the shop floor. That is the Get Organized system Teng has built around since 1985, and it is the part that does not have an equivalent in a foam insert.
The honest trade-off: a rigid tray with a lid takes more drawer depth than flat foam. If you are packing a drawer to the last millimetre, foam gives you more tools per inch. We think a lid and a carry handle are worth the depth. You may not, and that is a fair call either way.
Where GearWrench is cheaper, and by how much
Checked September 2026 against named major retailers. This is the worst case for us, not a flattering one.
| Item | Pieces | Price |
|---|---|---|
| GearWrench 89058 | 110 | $112.21 |
| Teng Tools TM111 | 111 | $375.99 |
That is a real gap on a near-identical piece count and we are not going to explain it away. If a general mechanics set at the lowest price is what you need, GearWrench is the buy. It does not run one way in every case, mind: on some individual tools we come out under them, and retail prices move constantly, so check on the day.
Where the gap closes: the loaded cabinets
Against GearWrench's own flagship loaded kits, compared per piece, the two brands land in the same place. Across nine matched pairs the average difference was about three percent, and on five of the nine we were the cheaper of the two.
One thing worth knowing if you are shopping GearWrench at this level: their price is not a single number. The same GearWrench MEGAMOD 1331 was listed at $13,499.99 at one national retailer and $15,789.99 at another on the same day, a spread of about seventeen percent. Check more than one, from either of us.

When GearWrench is the better call
- You want the cheapest competent hand tools. On loose sets they are usually under us, and that is the honest answer.
- You want ratcheting wrenches specifically. It is what the brand is known for and it is a strong product.
- You want it from a big-box shelf tomorrow. Retail distribution is a real advantage and we ship from one warehouse.
- You are packing drawers to the millimetre. Flat foam fits more tools into the same depth than a lidded tray does.
- You are building up gradually. Buying piece by piece off a shelf suits that better than a loaded cabinet.
When we are the better call
- You are buying storage, not just tools, and you want it covered for life rather than three years.
- You want trays that close and travel, not inserts that stay in the drawer.
- You are buying at full-cabinet level, where we come out level or cheaper per piece.
- You want a warranty with no authorized-seller clause and no receipt hunt.
- You want one supplier for over 3,000 items, designed in Sweden since 1985, shipped from Fort Worth.
- Your torque wrenches matter: ours conform to ISO 6789, are individually tested, and ship with a Declaration of Conformance.
Common questions
Is Teng more expensive than GearWrench? On loose hand tool sets, usually yes. On loaded cabinets compared per piece, no, we come out level or cheaper. It depends entirely on what you are buying.
Do both brands really have a lifetime warranty? On hand tools, yes, and both accept a photo instead of the tool coming back. The difference is what else is covered. GearWrench publishes 3 years on tool storage, 5 on carts, 1 on torque products with a 90-day calibration guarantee. Ours covers storage for the life of the tool.
What if I bought it on a marketplace? GearWrench's warranty applies to products bought from an authorized US seller and they reserve the right to reject claims from unauthorized sellers. We have no such clause.
What do the trays actually do that foam does not? They close and they connect. A hinged click-lock lid and dovetail joints mean a tray leaves the cabinet as a sealed module and locks to the next one when it comes back.
Where are Teng Tools made? Designed in Sweden, made in Taiwan. The brand was founded in 1985 and runs across more than 30 countries.
